A poor family in Haryana has refused a sum of Rs 60 lakhs offered by a collector of rare military artifacts.The family of late Honorary Capt Umrao Singh winner of the Victoria Cross (VC) for his daring exploits against the Japanese infantry in Kaladhan Valley, Burma, during World War II was offered the amount, and it has rejected the offer.

The British government had given away Victoria Cross awards for exceptional courage and bravery during the second World War. Now Victoria Cross has an unique antique value and is a darling of the memorabilia collectors.

Well, I think they should have traded it off. Honour lies in the deed, not in the medal. And for an impoverished family, some food on the plate would certainly be more useful than a medal in the closet.
