Remembering Dhan Gopal Mukherji

Dhan Gopal Mukherji (1890-1936) was the first author of Indian descent who lived in the US and wrote about Indian life for American readers. He wrote about 25 books of poetry, drama, fiction, children’s stories, biography and autobiography.

He was also, among other things, Gandhi’s representative at the League of Nations from 1924-1934. He also proved to be a major influence on Romain Rolland and M N Roy.

But it was the publication of Caste and Outcast in 1923, which marked a turning point in America’s understanding of India. Read report
