Remembering Gerhard Fischer, a friend of India

Gerhard Fischer, former German ambassador has a special relationship with Chennai. As Consul-General in the city in the Sixties, he helped set up the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and has a basketball trophy named after him.

After he quit the German foreign service, Fischer raised funds and supported a host of causes in India — eradication of polio and leprosy and caring for the mentally ill. Gerhard Fischer is no more.
