Somnath Sharma: Soldier who changed Kashmir history

"The enemy are only 50 yards from us. We are heavily outnumbered. We are under devastating fire. I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to our last man and our last round." His answer is now part of the Army lore. In the battle of Bagdam, Major Somnath Sharma, one JCO and 20 other ranks were killed.

The history of Kashmir could have been different but for the valiant fight given by the Indian army led by Major Somnath Sharma at Budgam in 1947. The army foiled the attempts of Pakistani raiders to capture the airport, he said. Had the airport fallen, the army could not have brought in reinforcements and saved Kashmir.

A Budgam War Memorial near the Srinagar airport was inaugurated recently by Governor Lieutenant General (retd.) S K Sinha and the sacrifice of Somnath Sharma was recalled.
