Amrit Singh recognised for her civil liberties crusade

Leading US civil rights lawyer Amrit Singh who represents the American Civil Liberties Union, was honoured with the Access to Justice Leadership Award from SABANY for her work as a counsel in the ACLU vs Department of Defence case, a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed to seek records relating to the torture of detainees held in US custody abroad.

She was also recognised for her work in the Ali vs Rumsfeld case, which was filed against US Defence Secretary Rumsfeld on behalf of Iraqi and Afghan detainees who were tortured in American custody.

Singh, 36, is Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's youngest daughter.
