Irrawady Dolphins find a home in India

The population of endangered Irrawaddy dolphins in Chilika Lake has gone up marginally from 131 last year to 135, the highest ever reported from the lake in Orissa.

In 2005, at least 17 dolphins were killed in the lake. However, in 2006 the figure came down to eight. The number of casualties reported so far this year is three.

The total population of the Irrawaddy dolphin is estimated to be less than 1,000. Apart from Chilika, Irrawaddy dolphins are also found in the Songkhla lake in Thailand. While it is difficult to spot them in Thailand, the dolphins can be easily sighted in Orissa.
