Baklava sweet makers in Mumbai: a dying art


Haji Ahmed Hajati aka Hassan is the only man in India who makes the original Persian Baklava – a double crust pie filled with nutmeg, flavoured nuts, the sweetest of syrups. His shop, the Iranian Sweet Palace, situated in an obscure lane off Mohamad Ali Road, in Mumbai is the last of its kind.

With changing tastes and times others seem to have died a natural death. Interestingly, Hassan opens the shop for just one week every year — from March 14 to 21.
