Remembering Actress Vanmala

Vanmala Devi, the yesteryears actress and a winner of the President's Award for Best Actress, passed away after a prolonged illness. She was 92.

Born as Susheeladevi Pawar in 1915, she adopted the screen name Vanmala and acted in several Marathi and Hindi movies since 1930s. She is known for her role in 'Shyamchi Aai' that fetched her the Best Actress award in 1953.

The supposedly demure Vanmala was a staunch nationalist and deeply involved in the freedom movement along with stalwarts like Aruna Asaf Ali and Achyut Patwardhan.
