People For Animals help save Cows in Chennai accidents

The move is sure to come as a welcome relief to motorists—who won’t have to squint in lowly lit areas for fear of hitting a sleeping animal—speeding on expressways like Tambaram and Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu .

In a novel move to reduce the number of hit-and-run accidents caused by low visibility at night, animal welfare organisation People For Cattle in India hopes to collar 20,000 cattle and stray dogs wandering Chennai’s streets by the end of the year. And a pilot project kicking off the first batch of 1,000 collars, locally manufactured in Tirupur, would be launched in the city on Sunday.

The collars are being manufactured with a base of orange nylon tape attached with a grey fabric reflective cloth, providing visibility of up to 1,000 feet in the dark.
