Dhananjay runs a cab with a rooftop garden

Dhananjay Chakraborty, is perhaps the only cab driver with a rooftop garden on his cab. Populary known as Bapi in Tollygunge area in Kolkata, he is on a mission to save the environment by spreading awareness on plantation.

He has nicknamed his cab as Sabuj Rath or the green chariot. His cab has eight-potted plants placed on the tray behind the back seat. The cab has an unique green interior besides its rooftop garden. Bapi has spent more than rupess 20,000 an amount that is equivalent to his monthly income—for making the garden.

Dhananjay's concern for the environment began when a Kolkata cabbie, Shatrughan Poddar, died due to a heat wave in 2014. The 52-year-old man was found unconscious inside his car near a major crossing in south Kolkata and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. This incident made Chakraborty think and he found a unique way to beat the heat.

Bapi has applied a little bit of science while making this garden. The tray—weighing around 65kg—that forms the base for the garden has been carefully designed by him.

He also distributes leaflets and pamphlets, with poems and drawings on enivronment to those who travel on his cab.
